FoodTRACE was started in 2006 following the e-coli spinach event that originated in Monterey County, California.  It was determined by a group that consisted of industry experts that improvements in the area of traceability were needed.  Several additional areas of expertise by individuals and companies were included in the process of determining what would work effectively for not only produce, but for all food items.
